A MESSAGE FROM JAN:
“I am saddened and sickened by the social media circus that this primary election has become.
I am done commenting there. I am willing to speak directly to any voter with questions or concerns. Call me, email me, or stop me in Ken’s or Wildwood.
We are better than the mud, the dirt, the lies being posted about me but more importantly about my team – the hourly office workers who didn’t sign up to be punching bags for a small group of disgruntled former office holders. I hold the elected office – aim your arrows at me but DO NOT subject my staff and our dedicated employees to the accusations, innuendo and unsubstantiated rumors of impropriety and irregularity.
This staff couldn’t possibly be more dedicated or driven to do their best all day every day. They’ve accomplished more in less than 2 years than the prior office did in the last twelve.
I am your current treasurer, and I approved this message.”

“I believe local government should be responsive to the needs of the community – ALL of the community.”

ABOUT JAN
My family has been in Indian River since 1979. My father retired from General Motors in 1990, and moved here permanently.
Dan and Judy Nunnery were active in the community, the Masonic Lodge and Order of the Eastern Star, as well as the Indian River Eagles and Auxiliary. Dad passed away in 1991, and Mom in 2014.
Keeping the family home, I moved up full time in 2016, and feel privileged to be a part of this wonderful community. My parents would want me to contribute to the best of my abilities. I’ve volunteered to fill vacancies as Cemetery Sexton, Deputy Clerk and most recently Treasurer.
QUALIFICATIONS
I have a Bachelors Degree in Business Administration with an accounting major. I worked full time to pay for my own tuition and paid my dues in accounting positions while gaining the necessary experience to take the CPA exam. After working for several accounting firms doing financial statements, all types of local, state and federal tax returns, audits and business consulting, I opened and managed my own practice. That entailed training, hiring, firing, marketing and every other responsibility that comes with owning your own business.
After 10 years of success I entered the corporate world directly, working as the accounting manger and assistant controller for a multidisciplinary, international law firm with 25 offices and over 600 attorneys. I also was the Controller for an intellectual property law firm as well an interim CFO for large non-profit entities and companies in transition. I have over 40 years experience in the business and accounting world.
I have a work ethic that was instilled in me from my UAW local president tool and die maker father, and my Consumers Energy career mother. I love solving problems and working to bring out the best in every employee who reports to me in whatever capacity. Their successes are my rewards.
I’ve gained incredible insights through my volunteer work as an instructor for Dave Ramsey’s Financial Peace University, and I’ve donated thousands of hours to a variety of charitable and philanthropic causes. As a founding member of Free and Fair Michigan, the local group affiliated with True the Vote, I taught, trained and spoke on election integrity issues throughout the state.
JAN’S PLANS
ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT
Its time for the hard discussions, and hard decisions. We will have at least a $70,000 budget shortfall from decreased state revenue sharing, both this year AND next. Do we have a contingency plan to offset this shortage? If not – why not?
We must create a culture that welcomes new development. We must make this community one that new businesses choose first because we do things better than the competing cities and townships.
We have to change our thinking from being a sleepy resort town to being an economic engine, that offers the amenities where people want to live and work and raise their families.
.
CULTURAL SHIFTS
Casual conversations with tourists reveal that, while they love the area and the recreational opportunities it offers, our businesses aren’t always meeting that goal as ambassadors.
While we all have examples of merchants going above and beyond expectations, we must do a better job of becoming the premier destination in Northern Michigan.
Our township board and every branch of our local government should set the tone for the future. We need to treat every resident with respect, whether they agree with our actions or not. We need to be open, welcoming and accommodating to opposing points of view. Over the past several years, there are many examples of board behavior that could and should have been handled differently.
RECOGNIZE OUR EXCELLENCE
One of my goals is to see the township move toward a model that would allow us to be recognized for excellence by the Michigan Township Association.
We need to be leaders in every aspect of governance. We need to think outside of the box, offering superior services while living within our means, and planning for the future.
I hope the voters will allow me to continue serving them as their township treasurer.

SUPPORT FOR LOCAL POLICE
In this age of social unrest, I think its important to state loudly and proudly that I will NEVER vote to “defund” the police or reduce our coverage, manpower or services. As a “Cop Mom” I am forever grateful to the sacrifices our local, county and state law enforcement officers make in the performance of their duties. I worry and pray for my police captain son every day he is on the job.
That doesn’t mean that we shouldn’t be fiscally responsible in our decisions. I believe that we should have kept the police millage at 4.5% from last year, instead of reducing it back to 4.07%. That would have given our department an additional $100,000 in funding to replace body cameras, vehicles, equipment or to cover overtime for events like our ever popular fireworks and festivals.
This could have been accomplished WITHOUT a tax increase. Why didn’t we do it?
MEMBERSHIPS
Jan serves as the Kiwanis co-treasurer, and is a member of: the Indian River Sportsman’s Club,
Secretary of the North Country Trail Association-Harbor Springs Chapter, and the Indian River Eagles Auxiliary
LOCAL TIES
My parents and grandparents chose this area to build a home and live in 1979. After my father Dan Nunnery passed away my mom Judy Nunnery lived out her life here, volunteering to drive those less fortunate to doctors appointments and hospital visits. I want to continue her lifetime of service to the community they loved, by using my skills and knowledge to solve the complex issues that will face our township in the coming years.
My parents would want me to contribute to the best of my abilities.
I’ve volunteered to fill vacancies as Cemetery Sexton, Deputy Clerk and most recently Treasurer.
